The MPLTL project team used quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate the experiences of students with disabilities (SWDs), specifically learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Overall, the project studied the (1) GPA, (2) persistence rates, (3) executive functioning skills, and (4) satisfaction levels of the students with disabilities who took STEM courses. The courses included Chem 112 and Calc 3 in the spring and Chem 111A and Calc 2 and Calc 3 in the fall. In addition, the team gathered data on (5) barriers to students’ success in STEM courses/MPLT. Finally, the team evaluated the (6) experiences of the peer leaders (n = 6) who were trained to run MPLTL groups. Two of the initial four peer leaders returned in the fall; two additional peer leaders were hired and trained that semester.
Spring 2008: A total of eight students with LD/ADHD participated in MPLTL. That included five students in Chem 111 and three in Calc 3. In addition, five students with LD/ADHD who did not participate in MPLT took PLTL. One of these students agreed to participate in the focus group and was interviewed individually by the Assistant Director of Evaluation, who conducted all the focus groups.
Fall 2008: A total of nine students with LD/ADHD participated in MPLTL. Some of these students participated in more than one PLTL. That included five students in Chem 112A, three in Calc 2, and three in Calc 3. In addition, two students with LD/ADHD who did not participate in MPLT took PLTL. Both participated in the focus group in addition to one student who was eligible for MPLTL but did not take any form of PLTL.
